Deal with it…

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings 2011 Gig Poster

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings Gig Poster published by Iron Forge Press

My initial thought when approaching a design for this great Soul/Funk revival act’s Gig Poster was to do a simplified bouncy drawing of Ms. Jones doing her thing and throw down some retro shapes and fonts of muted tones and maybe some weathering to the artwork to make it look like the poster was beamed from a few years before my birth… then I did a bit of research and was bored with the redundancy of this approach by so many artists. Sure my retro versions would have been as good or better than the best of them (and many I’ve seen are GREAT, not knocking the artistry), but, I thought, “What’s the point if I’m swimming in a sea of sameness?” So, I stepped back from it and reflected, opting to go with one of my strengths… a corny pun worked into a parody of an iconic image. It’s a fun piece that’s really going to stand out in the line-up!

Note: Update to come in a few days when I have a chance to shoot some pics of the printed pieces.
